Method

Violin Technique, the natural way

Written by Ronald Masin and Maria Kelemen
Printed in 1982 by Frits Knuf, Buren. Twenty chapters over 143 pages
Dedicated to André Gertler

Prefaced by Henryk Szeryng and recommended by Zino Francescatti, this is a violin tutor with a difference. Original on the one hand for its forty superb plates which for once enable the player to see the exact implications of the text. Original on the other hand for being a method not just for beginners but serving to refresh and refine mature players. The aim has been the creation of a comprehensive and fully illustrated method, beginning with the basics and ending when the player can in turn impart the knowledge gained to his or her own pupils. Avoidance of strain and unnecessary tension is a consistent consideration. The Kreutzer studies are used as a base and the approach is that of the Belgo-Hungarian school.

“The main features of violin playing and teaching are brought out clearly and thoroughly. The analysis of basic problems aiming at a better command of the instrument is very comprehensive…” – Henryk Szeryng

“… I strongly recommend this book to teachers and students alike. It describes the best ways to start practising without getting into bad habits. Every detail is dealt with exhaustively, thus opening the door to perfection of technique through understanding. I advise violinists to adopt this method. It will help them to learn and teach.” – Zino Francescatti
